My plant of the week this time is not in the gardens here at Gravetye but on the estate and can be found in the wood, by the lower lake. It is called Rubus spectabilis but also has the great common name of Salmonberry. Its native habitat is the west coast of the US but is naturalised in a few locations here in the UK making it a rather unexpected curiosity. The hot pink and textured petals of the simple flowers whilst small and drooping are somewhat exotic compared to the woodland bulbs and wildflowers around and a really pleasant surprise for me this spring.
