Preparing the beds for winter

We are starting to prepare the beds for winter. It can be heart breaking to lift the plants while they are still in flower, but it’s necessary as many jobs lay ahead of us in preparation for the spring.

All our tender perennials need to be lifted and carefully stored over winter. The more hardy herbaceous perennials will be pruned back and left in situ, while our annuals are removed altogether. There is always a lot of weeding to be done and bindweed is a particular problem in the gardens at Gravetye. We have been battling with this for years, so while the beds are clear we can tackle this pest and maybe just for a while we can feel a little victorious.

The final touch is digging in our homemade compost ready for our tulip bulbs.

Fay.
