Succisa pratensis, also known as devil’s-bit scabious
This is a rather rare wildflower which we are fortunate to have in abundance on the estate at Gravetye. Each year we try and cut the meadow as late as possible to give it a chance to seed. This careful management is now paying off because this year it’s never been so beautiful. Not only is it a beautiful wildflower but it is also brilliant for wildlife and this time of year the whole meadow is alive with moths, crickets, spiders and insects.
